Buddy's been gone 15-16 years; time for lots of advances. When Buddy ruled the world it was mostly all jazz, be it big band, bebop and what have you. I don't think we'll ever see another best, Tom, because it's a highly specialized field nowadays what with world beats, rap rock, etc. Weckl plays some things better than Vinnie and vice versa. Neither one of those older guys are gonna play with the frenzied non-stop power of a twentysomething Travis Barker (those among you who haven't seen him live don't put the kid down.) There are drummers who play reggae and rock and polka and ragtime and country better than the Colaeckls of the world. Everybody has their niche. Now we have drum specialists not unlike various doctors practicing different fields of medicine.

I think it only safe to say: "Soandso's the best drummer in his field. Soandso wears the current doublebass crown. Soandso's the new hip jazzer." Y'know, ad nauseum.

Of course, everybody's gonna have their favorite but we all know better than to take a 14 year old who's been playing drums two years seriously when he/she makes the claim that Danny Carey's the best drummer to ever get a blister on his thumb.

Peace and drums.

Keith Moon: My advice for beginners wanting to play the drums is to play the guitar.

speaking of danny carey, he sat in once for kirk covington on the last tune (fire - jimi) of a scott henderson gig at lavelee and oh man, that was probably one of the worst playing i've ever seen. scott kept looking back at him because he kept speeding up and messing up his guitar solo. by the time the song was ending it was pretty much in double time. i was just like, wow! why kirk let him play i have no idea.

i'd love to see vinnie sit in with scott henderson one day. that'd be awesome.

as far as just soloing goes, i think virgil can woop anyone's butt, even buddy's.

I think if you put him side by side with today top drummers, vinnie, gadd, weck, ext.. he would blow them all away hands down!

Hi,
Peter, i like virgil playing, but for me, there is another guy very easy on drums with a personal concept, virgil work on a lot, and we can listen that in Virgil's playing : Marco Minnemann.
All his new stuff, books and DVD, are very important for drummers. I saw in the TUDW DVD that Virgil work and play in the same direction.
Did u saw that as me?

Bouts,

I have seen some video of
Marco and there is no doubt
that he can play. I want to
see more of him.

It's a great time for the
instrument - lots and lots
of inspiration.

And no doubt Virgil has had a HUGE impact on Marco. Back in 2000 in an interview Marco said the guy he was watching and listening to ALOT for inspiration was Virgil, and you see some of it in Marco's playing even thought they are distinctly different. The only real similarity I see in the both of them is in their advancement of layering complex rhythm's as grooves and playing over them. Marco has been inspirational to Virgil in this one area, as Virgil has been to Marco. IMO Marco still looks and sounds like Terry B too much not surprising since Marco was influenced by Terry in a HUGE way.(even though I believe Marco is more advanced than Terry) I like Virgil's feel and groove MUCH better though and Virgil's phrasing is completely on another level more advanced, creative and down right musical to me anyway's. And Virgil's feet well simply put better!

Marco more advanced than Terry perhaps?

But who's more musical? Bingo!

Trying to argue who's the best drummer is something for 12 yr old kids who marveled at Travis insane alternating singles, but at the end it's a silly debate=

Rhythm Magazine: Okay, forgive the apparent dumbness of this question. You are now, as you seem to have been for years, very frequently cited as 'the greatest drummer in the world'. Who do you think is the greatest drummer in the world? Like I said, a dumb question, but answer it in whatever way you see fit.

Vinnie Colaiuta:"To me that's kind of an absurdity in this day and age, and it's a relative thing. I don't think there's any such thing as the greatest. What's the greatest for you? I said Tony's my hero, but somebody else might say, 'But he doesn't do this', or, 'He doesn't do that'. That's okay, maybe he doesn't want to enough."

The greatest argument is a waste of time. There are glaring differences in technique and sound and diversity and feel amongst drummers but the best is all relative. We like who we like and some drummers hit us and some do not. Even guy's with weak technique and chops and imagination hit us at times like the big guns do not. One thing to consider is WE the one's listening to others have distinct personalities, make-ups and taste's and certain things just impact us in completely opposite way's even when the difference in the ability is marked.

It's true, Boz. To argue
about who's this or that
comes down to individual
taste and development and
we know that varies WIDELY.

There are many great players
out there, each having a
voice and bringing something
to the table that others
aren't.

I mean what would life be
without the option of Italian
food or Sushi?
